Welcome to Backstage Pass
Home of the Youth + Music Development Trust
Backstage Pass is for all young - and some not-so-young - musicians looking for information about playing in a band in small town NZ.
Inside you will find stuff to help you become a better musician and some resources about technology, music business and running a gig.
There's also a bunch of mp3s and videos so, after you've done your practise, take some time-out and follow some of our hand-picked links, enter a competition or contribute to backstagepass.co.nz.
We are always looking for new tutors to work with our youth bands in Greymouth or to hold special workshops, specially if you're a seasoned muso passing through on tour - if you're interested flick me an email
What's on at Frank's?
Whatever your interest that brings you to our site, whether you're almost famous or simply a fan of live music - enjoy and thank you for visiting.
Our News:
2012 YMDT Auditions:
The YMDT 2012 Auditions will take place on Wednesday 15th Feburary @ 5pm, here at our downtown premises (90 Mawhera Quay, nxt to Westland Hydraulics)
All young aspiring musicians are encouraged to brush up on your favourite or latest song/instrumental piece, and head down here to share your talents with us here at YMDT.
This year, we will also be offering the opportunity to all/any adult musicians in the local community, to come along and take part in the auditions - so dust off the old guitar, bass, brass or woodwind instrument, harmonica, voice, drums - whatever it is you play, and get down here to our bandrooms.
This year we would love to feature both youth AND adult bands at YMDT events.
Furthermore, we also welcome aboard a couple of new band tutors/mentors, in the way of Ben Roper from Audio Dukey, as well as Lochie Jennison - both former students here, and both still actively involved in the local music scene here.
The format is pretty straightforward - there will be a basic audition registration form to complete, and then each of you will have the opportunity to perform a song or two of your own choosing, in a very relaxed enviroment in front of very supportive and encouraging YMDT staff/tutors.
The whole idea is to relax during the ordeal, and simply enjoy the experience of sharing your music with us - NO STRESS, NO DRAMA !!!
Just bring along your instrument - we are fully equipped with PA/mixer, amplifiers, drumkit, keyboard, leads, mic's etc
All you have to do, is show up here on the day with your instrument - and for those that may not have one, we can provide you with either a guitar, bass and of course our own Ludwig drumkit.
We look forward to seeing you all on the day, and to an exciting year ahead for all who are, and those who will be, a part of the YMDT experience.
SPREAD THE WORD !!!
'THE GIG 2011
'The Gig' 2011 was held once again at Tai Poutini Polytechnic on Saturday the 1st of October this year and everybody who turned up had an amazing time! We had workshops from local songstress Katie Thompson, Oakley Grenell, Macus Winstanley, Laura Szonneveld and Gary Smith.
Perhaps the main buzz of the day would have to be all of our young YMDT students who all performed remarkably well on the day and were well prepared and rehearsed for the event – youth bands included Aerodynamix (final gig in its present form as Vanessa is leaving for Wellington shortly) this also included an introduction of Rosie Russell who will take over as singer for the group. Guitar / vocal duo 16/20 also gave a splendid set , as did Spaz Attacks and The Village Idiots our new bands – both delivered good sets and show promise for the future.
A huge thanks must go out to all the youth bands for putting in the hard hours at rehearsals, all the talented muso's who gave workshops, Marcus and Adam from MAINZ and Tai Poutini Polytechnic the awesome venue!
